Not my forte, but I'm planning an anniversary celebration dinner for my company.
The question is whether or not we should have centerpieces. The venue is a well known museum. The room will be set up with round tables for 10 ish. It is a plated dinner for 120 people. I don't want it to look like a wedding, but I'm not sure the austere, plain table, banquet lunch look is quite right either. Any suggestions?

Maybe just some candles? You could throw some greenery artfully around them and call yourself done.

I agree with the candles. Maybe a bud vase with a single rose or flower (doesn't have to be real) with a few square or triangle votives around. That would be pretty and not wedding-y.

Something with a company theme?
Does your company have official colors? Ikea has an outstanding collection of candle cups, lanterns, vases (and small plants) and things like that.

Yeah, we have a budget for the dinner, but honestly, we didn't figure in centerpieces. We would use a florist. I'm not going to be winding or stacking anything. Our company is basically a technology service organization, so we don't do anything "tangible". We do have a logo and colors--black and red and white.
Candles are a good idea, though I would have to check with the museum about the fire code.

Hit the Christmas trees shop. Cheap stuff in bulk...glass, candles, ribbon etc...

Without a doubt a formal dinner party at a museum should have something special for a ctrpiece.
I agree with others that it needn't just be flowers (this from the flower lady). I would so something much more unique. If this fall, then something around colorful leaves and candles. If at Thanksgiving time - still unique fall but with gourds If winter, the appropriate fake snow and red/green. Etc. If you need to do low budget, appt the local decorator from your company to pull it off. It is not hard, but expensive if (I) some florist did it.

Candles on top of old CDs--shiny side up. (The tech theme.)
If the museum does events like this frequently, they might have centerpieces already. Ditto for whoever's catering. |

For one of the anniversaries we did - we had large candles (still have one) - along with some photographs from the archives printed on postcard stock paper that people could take with them. Wish I had a picture cuz I now we had osme other things on the table as well. You can always get some mini-fish bowls and put a flower in each.

Thought I'd close the loop and thank you all for your suggestions. Turns out we would have needed to pay a fire marshall to have candles. Here's what we ended up with:
Two good things: 1) they were very low so everyone at the tables could talk with everyone else. 2) I brought one home and it's still looking pretty good after 10 days!

How was the dinner (besides the centerpieces)? |

It went really well. I worked on a slide show of photos and a video with interviews from our founders, so that broke up the speeches, which weren't too long and deadly. Everybody liked the museum, and we even got an electricity show in the package. The food was also very good. Glad it's over though.
