Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the Hagia Sophia museum, one of Istanbul's most famous landmarks, to be converted into a mosque.

He made the announcement Friday, hours after a top court cleared the way for him to make the change.

Beautiful place, I was there in 2000.

I’m more concerned about what this says about Turkey than Hagia Sophia.

As if the wonderful Blue Mosque weren't enough!

Turkey has been going down the Islamification path for a long time. When I first became accquainted with Turkey, women's wearing headscarves was illegal per Kemal Ataturk. Now the president's wife herself wears one.

I was there in 1999. It was awe-inspiring.

I suppose this means that they will cover the beautiful Byzantine mosaics because they're figural. (And of Christian people like...you know...Mary and Jesus...)

I just hope they don't destroy them.
