That takes me back to the nine months I worked in northern Minnesota. I bought some of that local rice there and brought it back to Pennsylvania to share.

I understood the harvesting process in the canoe but not the winnowing and parching that took place afterwards.

It's definitely different than anything I can find in stores around here. Now I know why.

My parents spent a lot of time in Northern Minnesota and actually lived in Ely for a few years. They received a birch bark canoe as a wedding present from some Ojibwe friends - a story I wish I knew in more detail. The last time I was in Minnesota was 1966, and at that time the canoe was still stored in a barn in Gilbert, MN. I wonder if it is still there.

My Grandmother would bring Ojibwe wild rice with her when she came to visit in the late 60's. I can still remember the taste - nothing like store bought wild rice.

I ordered some of the wild rice through Amazon; it should be here sometime later this week or early next week. I've never had the "real thing" so will be interested to see what it tastes like!

The wild rice/manoomin arrived back in November but I never got around to cooking it until today. It is absolutely delicious, and quite different from the dark brown cultivated wild rice I've eaten before.

I decided to make a wild rice, mushroom and chicken soup. I cooked the rice and saved the water, which I added to the chicken broth that is the base for the soup.

Manoomin could get to be an expensive habit....
