Allegro Pianos? I've been there with LL (and BeeLady if I recall correctly).

Best of luck on your search for your piano, SK.

Bernard, huh, I wonder if it's the same. I'll need to do more research, but I'm thinking it's not.... So Allegro Pianos is in NYC right?

What I saw is financing offered by some piano dealers around here, and the financing company is called Allegro. Although, who knows, maybe the companies are connected.

Anyway, I need to not take the financing option!! I just need to buy a piano within my budget. So, in other words, I need to just not even play any pianos above my budget.

This will be difficult, but I can do it!! suave

Or save for the piano of your dreams and buy a bit down the road....

Seriously, though, I am ready to move up a grade from my current instrument, and I'm pretty confident that if I'm patient, I can find a decent used grand under $10,000 that will resolve a lot of the complaints I have about my current piano. The appeal of the instruments I could get for double that budget is the only reason the financing link caught my eye, but I think my resolve is strong. Razzer

[diversion]The one piano that totally knocked my socks off was actually at one of those shady "university piano sales": a slightly beat up M&H BB. I had nowhere to put a grand at the time unless I gave up having a dining room table (which now actually seems like a good idea).

I am still regretting not buying Kenny's BB when I had the chance.[/diversion]

PJ, I'd like to play a M&H some day. I've never played one, but a lot of piano forumites speak so highly of them!

Mary Anna, don't you have a Mason & Hamlin? Or is my memory just useless?

It's interesting thinking about the brands I have played the grand models enough to feel I have at least some familiarity ...

Yamaha (of course)
Steinway
Boston
Kawai
Baldwin
Schimmel

...

Wait, is that it?? That's not very much variety! Especially considering all the brands I could rattle off just from reading about them on PW!

I would like to have the chance to play a really nice Petrof, because my little upright is a Petrof and has such a different voice from the other uprights I've played.

I have a Yamaha C7, and I still love it after fifteen years. I had an old (1932-ish) Hamilton Baldwin 5'5" grand before that, which was wonderful until its age caught up with it. I may have mentioned playing a Mason and Hamlin at church. I liked it fine, but I never loved it.

I know that a lot of people like other brands better than Yamaha but I love my piano's tone, especially the bass. And the action is still smooth as glass.

You know, I can think of a book that would be a very helpful guide an assistant in your piano search... A mutual friend of mine and Bernard's is also in the thick of a piano search and she read it and says it really helped her.

A technician in your area read the book and asked me to come to SC to do a reading. He was very enthusiastic and was giving out copies to his tuning clients. I am having trouble remembering his name, but I remember his business name Fur Elise pianos--And IIRR he actually named his daughter Elise (my tech in Idaho named his son Mason and his dog Fazioli).

Anyway, this tech struck me as very good, and very knowledgeable, and also very kind. Mr Pique says the reading was near Myrtle Beach, so I believe he lives somewhere in that area. I hope that may be enough clues. I don't think I have his contact info any more. If I were looking for a piano in SC I would definitely talk to this guy.

Mary Anna,, Oh my goodness! How could I forget, I do remember that you have a Yamaha and that it is really big!! I wonder how big the Yamaha I really like is. It’s in a church near here, I love that piano but I’m sure that model is way too big for my room.

Aha! I found him. Jim Kelly. It doesn't look like he serves your area, but please do call and tell him I sent you. I am betting he can give you leads and tell you if your university sale is legit, and also tell you who to avoid.

Myrtle Beach is probably too far for me, though I will keep his name in mind.

I should read your book again, it’s been a very long time since I read it and although I’m not necessarily a better pianist, I am a different pianist... Although your book would probably take me down the road to a piano I can’t afford!! suave

Kenny’s BB was the finest piano I have ever heard.

Or played.

piqué, we are simul-posting. But yes, reading your post, I will call him when I get more along in the search, I bet he knows the tech who was recommended to me, and he would know of the stores I’m thinking of visiting in the Asheville and Charlotte areas and might have some insight. Thank you!

We cross posted. The book would answer many of the questions you've posted here, and in some depth. Let me know if you talk to Jim--send him my best.
