There's a lot of focus on the presidential campaign and the sense that we must unseat Trump. For any number of reasons I'm feeling pessimistic about it, if only because I think the Democrats are going to fracture: Progressives vs. "center". I think a better focus would be the Senate and an all out effort to regain control. Honestly? I could live with another four years of Trump if the Democrats controlled both houses. It would basically render him ineffective. At the moment it seems harder to imagine unseating Trump than it does gaining control of Congress. I hope we aren't putting all our eggs in one basket.

Of course we need him gone. I'm really afraid it isn't going to happen and the Democratic party shouldn't be banking everything on that scenario. Another 4 years of Trump without a Senate would be a heck of a lot better than 4 more years of Trump and a republican Senate.

I don't think it will be a piece of cake, but it's entirely possible. ME, AZ, and CO are good contenders. As of yesterday, KY might be in play. And then there's Moore in AL. NC did not go heavily for Trump in '16. It will be a very bad thing if Trump gets re-elected with a Republican Senate again, and I think there's a strong possibility of Trump winning.

I agree! There should be no banking on anything! We are in a very precarious position and all planning should be taking that into account.... whatever that means.

I find the entire process sickening. American politics is very very broken - and has been since President Obama won his first term and arguably even before then. I tried to leave and hide out in the UK, but then their government also lost its mind so all that happened was I got a different dose of race hatred craziness than I would have had I stayed in the US. So I do everything I can to ignore what's going on with the elections. I'll support the Democratic candidates of my choice in the Colorado primaries. After that, I'll vote for whoever the rest of the state/country decides should be the Democratic candidates. | |||

On a related note, my take is that the most powerful man in the country today is Mitch McConnell. He alone is setting the agenda for all of Congress (because the House cannot pass any legislation without the Senate going along). He is flooding the courts with extreme right-wing judges. Remember, he alone prevented Garland from getting a confirmation hearing. His agenda is extreme. And basically I-1 is his useful idiot. McConnell and the rest of the GOP will turn a blind eye to anything I-1 does just so they can continue to realize the subjugation of the country they have been dreaming of for years. The Senatortoise must go.

Agree re: McConnell. It's always seemed odd to me that the Senate Majority Leader can simply deep six any legislation they want. I don't understand how these people keep getting re-elected for doing nothing. Congress' popularity ratings are practically in the single digits, but we keep voting them back in. There should be some way to ensure that the Senate (regardless of whoever's in power) actually does their job. This scorched earth policy, party above country, is ruining us. | |||

McConnell is the slime beneath the swamp. He only gets 33% approval rating in Kentucky. So yeah, I don't understand how he keeps getting elected.
