Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is resigning, President Trump announced in a tweet Sunday, as the president continues to fume over continued illegal border crossings. CBS News first reported Nielsen's impending departure, which Mr. Trump announced after a 5 p.m. meeting with Nielsen at the White House.

At what point does Trump become the last one standing?

She's only gone so the white nationalist Stephen Miller can bring in someone nastier to do his anti-any-and-all-immigration bidding.

No kidding.

All in all, of the 18 most important positions in the department subject to presidential nomination and Senate confirmation, Nielsen’s departure will leave only nine filled. This is almost entirely Trump’s fault: He has failed to select any nominees for some positions, caused other personnel to leave at unprecedented rates by making impossible demands, and done such a poor job of picking people that many have withdrawn before they could get confirmed.

It’s now been more than a year since Trump had a full, confirmed cabinet, something he’s only had for about four and a half months of his presidency. He’s unlikely to change that any time soon.

If many "top" jobs are left unfilled, then many "top job" decisions will be left to career civil servants or to appointees whose appointments didn't count enough to Trump to be overtly politicized. That may be a good thing.

Indeed.

quote:
At the end of the day, the source said, Nielsen could not make Trump happy with her performance on the border. This source said Trump might as well name Miller as the next DHS secretary. "He's the one driving the policy," the source added.

Miller was also behind the sudden withdrawal of the nomination of Ron Vitiello for director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which caught both Congress and the Department of Homeland Security by surprise. Nielsen was unaware what was happening until after the nomination was pulled, a person familiar with the news said.

He'll just appoint acting heads. Or let Mulvaney be the head of everything.

I wonder if the white nationalist hate-filled cretin Stephen Miller was one of the 25 people in the White House who were denied a security clearance.

So the two most powerful people in the U.S. gummint are:

Stephen Miller

and

Mitch McConnell.

If that doesn't keep you up at night, I don't know what will.

For a guy who made his name on TV pretending to fire people, Individual 1 sure delegates a lot of the firing IRL.

Max Boot at WaPo.

quote:
It is time to end the charade. Trump is agitated that Nielsen was not barbarous enough for his depraved tastes. She still retained some vestigial loyalty to the Constitution and the laws of the United States. Given that we are in a time of purported emergency, we can no longer afford such sentimental attachments. Rather than appoint another outsider who will never live down to his expectations, Trump should nominate as her successor the actual mastermind of the administration’s immigration policies: White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller.

This is the 33-year-old wunderkind who orchestrated the Muslim travel ban, vast reductions in refugee admissions, efforts to build the wall, attempts to deport the "dreamers," the deployment of troops to the southern border, and, of course, the family separations policy — along with the accompanying hysteria about crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. He even went so far as to deny that the Emma Lazarus poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty — "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” — represents the spirit of America. Miller has further ambitions such as ending “birthright citizenship” and slashing legal immigration. He should assume formal, legal responsibility for this un-American approach.

Stop trying to put a civilized face on an uncivilized policy. Trump should have the courage of his racist convictions: nominate Miller as secretary of homeland security and let the puppetmaster come out from behind the curtain. Or is Trump afraid that even a Republican-controlled Senate wouldn’t confirm this nativist fanatic? Miller may well be judged too radioactive because he eschews the “white lies” favored by Nielsen and her predecessor, John F. Kelly. If an honest defense of the administration’s heartless and vindictive approach to immigration won’t survive the light of day, perhaps that should be an indication to the president that the real problem is not personnel but policy.

The outgoing director of the U.S. Secret Service Randolph “Tex” Alles said on Monday that he was not fired, describing the shift as part of an “orderly transition in leadership” across the Department of Homeland Secretary.

“No doubt you have seen media reports regarding my ‘firing.’ I assure you that this is not the case, and in fact was told weeks ago by the administration that transitions in leadership should be expected across the Department of Homeland Security,” Alles said in a message to Secret Service agents.

“The president has directed an orderly transition in leadership for this agency and I intend to abide by that direction,” Alles said.

The entire country's immigration (among other things) policy is being determined by a vindictive twerp who when he was a scrawny white kid in LA was bullied by some Latinos.
