Parents pay researchers/college profs/grad students to "mentor" their high school kids to get some research papers published in peer-reviewed publications, between $2,500 and $10,000 a pop. The typical college admission staff can verify that a paper is published but cannot assess the quality of the paper.

College admissions staffs are not stupid. They know the difference between "paper mills" and real publications.

Look at it this way. There's probably a societal benefit in sucking some money out of parents who are stupid enough to pay for this kind of service.
