I love it. I was trying to feel some sympathy for those houses, but every one really was an over-the-top kitschy disaster. Total mismatches of items in the architects toolkit. Building by numbers.

These are literally just down the street from me.

The houses around me have the architectural sensibility of two drunken six-year-olds fighting over a box of legos. I think the style is called "WTF???", or "how much money can we spend on senseless carp that looks like something a person with actual taste would own".

Or as people say about Trump, "this is how poor people think rich people live."

Also note that with the skyrocketing property values around here, any of the dumps featured in that selection would fetch at least four or five million in this 'hood.

I went to look at a used Grotrian grand in a house that looked like these, somewhere in a Seattle suburb. As grotesque inside as outside.

The only thing worse than the outsides is the insides. I can't go to Homearama anymore because the houses are just so over the top. Very poor taste.

Living among these organisms, I think that most of them are not and never will be happy. For them, it's not about being happy, it's about trying to outdo each other in how much money they can spend on things they don't need. The house, the Land Rover, the grand piano that will never be played, there was even a fad of buying $30,000 motorcycles to sit in the garage, never to be ridden.

Shortly after moving into his mcmansion, my next door neighbor was having a dinner party on his back deck one evening and the entire conversation was a litany of features and the refrain "mine's bigger" (that and a discussion of why several of them would never move back to Hong Kong).

Many of these houses are owned by DINKs. Who in Cthulu's name needs a 6500 square foot house for just two people?

It's not about happiness. It about the absolute tackiest in conspicuous consumption.

That's the worst bit: people who move here and cut down all the trees. If you don't like trees, why in the name of Odin did you move here???

Funny that the McMansion Hell site doesn't show any interiors. Wonder in what way they are as bad as the exteriors.

I've been in a few.

Gaudy, disjointed, weird combinations of materials and shapes. Gratuitous, useless features (granite countertop on a nook about 10 feet from the front door... too far from the door to be useful, and why the holy heck do you need a piece of granite (probably leftover from the kid's bathroom) there???). Ridiculously high ceilings. A gas fireplace filled with shards of glass in the entryway. An eight burner commercial stove. Three dining areas, one with halogen spotlights aimed right into people's eyes.

Shall I go on?

I think the author is focusing on the architecture of these buildings.

The interiors would need another whole website....
