My friend Bruce Brubaker the chairman of the NEC piano dept is on the front page of the NY Times Arts and Leisure section!
Interesting article on the Poisson Rouge - sounds like an interesting place we should all support. He is a "Steinway" artist seen here playing on a Yamaha piano. I hope this is not a career limiting picture! http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06...e.html?_r=1&ref=arts

I've been to Le Poisson Rouge, and have applied to play there (got turned down...I suppose Givony didn't like the music I proposed.) I think I need to propose something HE likes.
Sarah Cahill is playing there in October. Aki Takahashi is playing there next week (I'm going). I did see the article today. I didn't realize Brubaker was the guy at NEC; maybe I didn't read the article thoroughly. It's a crazy place...really a subterranean lounge. Yes, they serve drinks, and it's a bunch of cocktail-loungy tables, very dark with curious reddish accents. Very booze-y! There's a decent stage, and when I've been there, I've noticed the patrons actually DO keep quiet and pay attention to the music! Funny, though -- last time I was there, there was a 9-foot Steinway. Why the shorter Yamaha?

You know, in October Sarah Cahill is playing some of her program of commissioned works "A Sweeter Music" (new anti-war compositions) at Le Poisson Rouge, where I know you want to visit. We should make it a party!

I'll have to ask her again when it is. She mentioned it in passing, but it's not listed on her site or Poisson Rouge's yet.

Well, apparently her concert is October 12, but maybe something else is going on when you're around. I haven't checked the web site. But of course, we might consider some other meeting place as well. (LPR is usually a $15 admission plus price of drinks, BTW.)

A further note on LPR...great if you want to hear some music in a loungey atmosphere, not so great if you're looking for conversation and reconnecting with friends. Depends what you're in the mood for!
