Rachmaninoff: Prelude in G Minor

Hi..
Well, I've finally joined the new Millen' and now have DSL. Anyway, while listening/watching the Rach Gm prelude, I noticed that in measure 6, counts 4+5 (2 16ths and an 8th)the notes were not played as I learned them. I don't have my score with me, but I was wondering what edition your Son is using. I learned them (back in the Dark Ages) as one note in each hand, not an octave in the left and one in the right. I hope this makes sense. I'm just curious. I also played this piece in recital in the Dark Ages, too. Smiler

Hi Eldon,

Wow, you must have gone on an archaeological expedition to find this thread! Wink

I haven't checked in much in a while so I didn't notice till now.

You're right. It looks like he does play an octave in that measure. I can't quite tell because it happens so fast. He used a pretty standard Schirmer edition, which we seem to have conveniently misplaced or loaned out. So, maybe he made that measure a little bit harder on himself! Big Grin

He still plays the piece once in a while. It's in his long term memory. But it's not polished right now. It could be brought back quickly, though.

To finish the story, he didn't win the Virginia Federation state competition last year with this piece. But, he DID win it this year with a piece I suppose I should post -- the White Peacock by Charles Tomlinson Griffes. Maybe I'll do that.

Hi,
Your Son plays REALLY well. I know you must be very proud of him. Post the latest piece; we'd love to hear it.

Ah, I noticed you were also looking at the earlier version of the prelude. We took that one down off of youtube. He made a better recording a few weeks later. A link to that one can be found a few posts down from the original post.
