Well - let me state that my humidistat setting does not matter. My humidifier is on all the time in the winter as my apartment is a wind tunnel from the window to the bathroom vent. All humidity that my little machine generates floats by the piano on its way back out the apt and my hygrometer rarely reads over 40% in the winter.

So piqué may have quite a different experience than I have had with this humidifier as her room seems to seal quite well.

f your Venta is controlling adjoining rooms as well, maybe I don't even need to close the piano room doors.

i would be on guard against sealing up the room, as that is often a good way to create a rainforest.

humidifier hygrometers are simply not that reliable and it's always good to have a way for the steam to escape the room, especially when you aren't around to monitor the situation.

joe, i didn't get the venta airwasher because i really need the hygrometer in my climate and the airwasher doesn't have one.

when i get home, if you are still interested, i'll find the model number for you, but i think that BBB only sells one venta that has a hygrometer.

Well, it looks like I will have to look for a bigger humidifier after all. My wife doesn't like closing off the piano room as a rule because that makes the adjoining foyer colder.

So now I am looking for something that will treat at least double the space, so 750 sq. feet minimum, because the foyer opens onto the kitchen and stairwell...big open area.

When I had the Dampp Chaser installed, it was because I assumed there was no way to humidify such a big open area. But there are humidifiers out there that say they can handle even 1000 or more sq. ft., so there's hope for this open floor plan yet.

Just buy two of the same kind! You can improve the coverage that way too (more even distribution).

I've had a Holmes for five years which I was pretty happy with. Mr. Teachum ran across a smaller model Holmes on the internet which he bought as a backup so I wouldn't be left w/o if the old one carped out. When it got really dry at one point I set it up to help the other one. I think it actually works far better than the older/bigger one. It is quiet, efficient and easy to fill. So now I have three humidistats in the room - two with the machines and one that is independent. I find the new machine registers higher than the other two so I adjust accordingly. My room is about 16X32 and not sealed off. The machine has no problem keeping the humidity at 42-45 all the time.

OK, believe it or not, I got off the fence. For better or worse, I am now the (proud?) owner of a Bemis H12-400 or whatever it's called...anyway, 12 gallon floor model.

I was swayed by the hard job the sweet Bionaire had keeping the humidity %age up there. I've been doing internet searching for comments on humidifiers and, as usual, there are positive and negative reviews in roughly equal numbers.

I noted that many PW members have this Bemis model, or a similar one, and it was $40 cheaper than the Sears Kenmore 14-gal. model, so what the hay, I had to make a decision! Loved the Bionaire's whisper-quiet operation, but in my heart of hearts, I never believed those little units could do the massive job in our massive space. The Bionaire will move to our bedroom, where its pleasant gurgling will lull us to sleep.

I'll keep you posted. Right now, the unit has been on for a couple of hours and it's at 40% in the foyer adjacent to the piano room, and the piano room must be about 45%.

All this plus a Dampp-Chaser too!

A piano is a harsh mistress.

Interim report...the Bemis can't really handle the open floor plan when outdoor temps get to freezing or below. It gets to 40% on a good day. If the piano room door were closed, it would be fine, up to 45 or 50%.

I'm going to try placing it closer to the piano. Maybe I'm obsessing; after all, I have a D-C installed, so maybe I don't really have to worry much.

I'm also ticked off about the Bemis filling method. Fill the 2.5-gal. bottle and upend it so it drains into the reservoir; when empty refill the bottle and replace to act as a secondary feed. The stupid bottle doesn't want to empty all the way on the first fill. Dumb.

I'm stuck with it; will try to massage it into submission, or into a manageable situation. It needs filling once a day (i.e., two bottle fills).

Some thoughts.

The damp chaser may help the sound board but what about all those teeny weeny wooden action parts? Doesn't come close to helping them.

A room needs to not only have the air humidified, it will take a while for your walls, stuffed furniture, wood pieces to absorb the moisture as well. I heard 3 wks. Then it will just be maintenance. Still in the heater months, it will need quite a bit of water.

I am filling my venta over a gallon a day right now and it is running on fast/3 to keep it 40 adnd someomtimes 42. Dry electric heat.

Odd thing is that I have to dehumidifier my damp cellar at the same time. Grrrrr.

Hey, LL and others, is this the Venta you are all talking about?

How much water does it hold, both tanks together?

LL, if you are filling a gallon a day, that's pretty efficient. The big one I bought takes 5 gallons a day and I have to fill it daily. Maybe, as you say, once the furniture absorbs some moisture, it will run longer between fillings.

I've been thinking about asking my tech about the undercover for the piano. I wonder if that would send some humidity over to the action area.

Try pressing the plunger with your finger just before re installing the water bottle. I don't know why this works.

Hi, Lee. I've tried that but haven't noticed it helps.

[Sigh] I've resorted to a method mentioned in somebody's Amazon review: Go ahead and do the first fill (carefully) directly into the tank from a jug, or use the tube attached to the faucet. Then use the bottle only for the auxiliary fill. Seems to work fine that way, but is more tedious. Using the tube means rolling the whole unit over to the sink.

Funny it's called a 'whole house" humidifier. I guess that's true if your whole house is only as big as my living room.

I have heard that because of the spider, MH is not the best candidate for an undercover.

I asked that very question on PW a little while ago (because I thought so too) but got a couple of responses that the problem is only aesthetic. Here is the link (pages 7 and 8 of the discussion).

D-C thread on PW
