I'm sneaking into this thread a bit ashamed. I'm actually challenging myself. I've mentioned my asthma several times but I don't think any of you realize how bad it is. It's the exertional variety which means I usually end up having to rest after I climb a flight of stairs. I've been advised to walk to keep my heart strong but nothing more strenuous, so I'm challenging myself to 10 minutes a day to start out. (I tried half an hour recently - made it actually but thought I was going to die- so I think I'd better work up to it.) Hopefully, I'll be back.

Frycek,
I'm asthmatic, too. I use Advair Diskus, and Albuterol inhaler - and need lots of caffeine - in fact I just bought some bottles of ephedrine, because it temporarily relieves shortness of breath, and eases breathing for asthmatics.

I hope you feel better. You're not alone.

Anybody care to revive it? Here's my week:

Sure! I'm in. I'm shooting for perfect attendance in my morning exercise class. Those who manage it win an incentive prize, like a running shirt or hat.

May 1 -- One hour jogging and strength training

That's great. I can't adhere to any set schedule - especially in the morning. I am NOT a morning person. If I can get 10,000 steps on my pedometer I'm happy. If I can get some ab lounge work done, too, I'm happy. Sporatic. (I do not belong to a gym). But...if you make a list I'll join! Flower

I managed six minutes at a brisk walk. Singularly unimpressive, but a start. I could probably do a bit more if I stopped and allowed myself to catch my breath. That's how I manage to do yard work.

You guys caught me flat-footed. (Gee, that was almost a pun, and if it had been, it would have been a bad one.)

I didn't know the challenge had been set, so now I've let 2 days go by without joining in. But as of Wednesday, May 3, I'm in.

Joe, don't feel like the only remedial exerciser. I've always had what my doctors call a "poor exercise tolerance." I can walk for a decent distance (slowly), but if I try to do something that would be mildly aerobic for a regular person--run a half-block, do a low-impact aerobics class--then I find myself clutching my chest and sprawled on the ground, heaving. A cardiologist called it being "oversensitive to my own adrenaline."

So I usually just don't exercise. And having been pretty sick for more than a year, culminating in two surgeries, I've been even slacker than usual. Not a constructive approach. My resolution here is to do something, anything, above my baseline activity level. Every day.

Yoga works for me. (And it might work for Joe.) Mild walking is good. Like Joe, I can garden, if I pace myself.

I'm looking forward to seeing how much I can get done this month.

BTW, Sharon--my picture's on my website. I won't soil WTF's bandwidth with it.

Mary Anna, I can't say I'm glad you've got poor exercise tolerance but now I feel little less alone here in the world of "an hour jogging and strenght training." Knowing someone else out there is just puffing along like the "little engine that could(?)" is a great morale booster.

May 2--Twenty-minute walk around the neighborhood with husband, who said I was really moving fast for me. ThumbsUp Of course, the reason for that is because I just got off the phone with my agent who was earnestly explaining why publishers and bookstores are making good money off my books, but I'm not. Evil At least I got some mildly vigorous exercise out of it.

MaryAnna - You should be ashamed of yourself, downing yourself that way. You ARE stunning!

Okay - I'm in as usual. What's the challenge? I'm back to walking since the weather is nice (sort of).

May 1 - 30 minute walking
May 2 - 30 minutes walking.
