Teachum's idea that we pin the exercise thread to the top gave me an idea.

Maybe we could have an exercise challenge where we'd each pledge to exercise 5 days a week for a month. Participants would add a post to this thread, updating their post (using the edit post function) to add each day's exercise. Record miles, minutes, laps, whatever makes sense. By the end of the month, you'll have a record of exactly what you did that month.

Those not participating could add supportive comments, general encouragement, or pointed heckling, as the case may be. Neener

How much exercise is enough to meet the challenge? Well, that will vary by individual, of course. How about we say that you have to put in a respectable amount of cardio or strength exercise -- something you consider a challenge?

Is anyone interested in having a go for February, with a goal of putting in at least 20 days of exercise for the month?

Anyone who puts in the full 28 days of exercise for February will be recognized with the WTF Overtraining Award, to be bestowed on the middle-aged athlete who doesn't know when to quit.

Great idea, Teachum! February is a hard month for me to stay motivated, and this ought to help a lot.

Hee!

Sorry, no. You'll have to do something else, as working toward having one really buff shoulder probably doesn't count. Big Grin

I feel your pain, though. I'm still (still!!!) doing PT, and I've resolved to walk for my exercise, mostly.

I'm in.

Feb 1 - Rode the trainer bike in the garage for 40 minutes. Watched part of "Six Feet Under" on the laptop on a stool in front of it. That was very cool, and not nearly as boring as staring at the fridge and the wall... Big Grin

Feb 2 - Weights at the gym - 35 minutes
- Trainer bike in garage - 45 minutes
Feb 5 - 35 minutes weights
Feb 7 - 40 minutes on trainer bike in garage
Feb 8 - 45 minute bike ride in the great outdoors
Feb 9 - 35 minutes weights, 60 minutes dealing with large snorting four footed pain in the butt beastie that would have rather been out grazing, thank you very much.

I'm definitely in. Does speed cleaning count as long as I break a sweat or do I have to schedule extra Pilates sessions?

I'm in, 20 days a month is a good goal for me.

So, should each person state what they consider enough exercise to count? I have a stretching routine that I do after almost every piano practice, but it only takes 10 minutes, so that alone won't count for me. My goal is a 20-30 minute brisk walk, or if the weather's bad, 20 minutes of marching around inside and going up and down the stairs (which is actually a harder workout than just walking)

Hmm, now is trying to fulfill my Mover and Shaker goal going to interfer with my MOYD goal? That's the real challenge!

Right. Although lots of other things besides cardio count. Pilates, strenth training, whatever you'd be comfortable doing in a gym.

So, I assume we start reporting it all in a post Feb 1st then? Then we edit & add to that one post each day for a month?

Exactly!

Sure, if you want. In the post where you keep your log, feel free to be descriptive. It makes for better heckling! Big Grin

There's no need to commit to anything up front if you'd prefer not to. In my case, I'm going to have to do whatever I can do that day while avoiding injury. As I'll be trying to build strength primarily, I plan to listen to my aging body so as not to overdo it.

Hey, Quirt? What's with the burst of exercise? Is this normal for you, or did you turn over a new leaf?
