I'd love to get together... while I don't go every year, it is interesting enough to do each year without repeating yourself... Don't underestimate the impact this show has on the local hotellery... it is almost impossible to find a room in Tucson (current population is north of 1,000,000) during the show. Book early. And, while our public transportation is not the greatest, it does work to get you around. |

nice to meet you Bill
what is your favorite scent? |

When I wear scent it's Royall Lyme...
But although I love citrus and vanilla scents, probably my absolute favorite is the smell of bread in the oven. |

I noticed here that you celebrated a honeymoon not too long ago. Do you care to share a little inspiration and/or advice for the WTF members who are presently not so blessed?
Also, I thought I might share this link to photos of a RGS layout that a fellow local NMRA member has: Kevin's layout Big Al |

Al, I'm not so sure I can be an inspiration to the members who are presently not so blessed... after all it took me almost 60 years to have one.

And Al, I looked at the photos of your friend's layout. Nice looking layout... HOn3?

Al,
Those are great pics! What do you guys think about N gauge? My space I'm planning for is only 8x8 along three walls and I'd like to have a U shaped layout, but with HO, the turn radius would be too tight for any sort of continuous run. Do you think it's just too small? I love the bigger gauges... any thoughts? BC |

Bill,
We've got to get you some space so you can get that layout going. Did you talk to the Mrs. about the bedroom? |

My solution to this is to still build stuff (why oh why am I reminded of the late George Carlin's classic monologue on "stuff") like cars in O scale, while having some N scale around to run when the urge to watch trains run hits. I can highly recommend some of the recent issues from Kato (I have a GG1 as well as a complete Daylight train (with a GS-4) that is one of the nicest versions of this train ever done... and it even looks good orbiting a circle of track on the floor (don't ask about how it looks in a meet with the GG1 though...) MicroTrains has some terrific cars as well, and is my go-to source for freight cars in N scale. As for being too small... that's what Z scale is for! |

Yeah... right. It's jam-packed full of what she calls "my junk" (boxes filled with trains and magazines) as well as other non-currently-essential-but-nice-to-have things. There's supposedly a bed under that big pile of stuff somewhere... which, of course, will magically re-materialize when my MIL makes her next visit. |

Well, trains seem to be taking over your thread, Bill.
Yes, Kevin Kuzman's layout is HOn3. Chris, you might look into a couple of Iain Rice's recent layout books. He's a transplanted Brit and they know quite a bit about putting a lot of railroad into a small space. I'd recommend the following: I have a good friend that has an excellent HO layout in a fairly small bedroom. It's stacked with a pretty large staging yard on the bottom, a helix connecting to the top and a good variety of switching operations there. Continuous running is via loop connections on both top and bottom and it takes a long time for those Kato diesels to navigate the entire circuit running at speeds appropriate for a branch line. A few photos are here: Tom Gaus' layout. Good luck with getting something you enjoy. Big Al |

Well, trains are better than politics... Al, I've heard about this book, but haven't seen a copy in my grubby hands as of yet. Of course, there isn't a hobby shop anymore here in Tucson (interesting, since the population is now over a million... California here we come!) I would guess that the internet and declining hobby interests have killed off many local hobby shops. While I can appreciate the lower prices from on-line sources, I still miss them. SIGH! |

Speaking of declining hobby interests, I was watching the PBS series on "Crafts in America" the other night, and one comment that was made during the first program struck a chord (Em?) with me... the person describing his teaching of various craftsman-type projects remarked that one of the things he liked about teaching children was that they were totally unaware that things could be made by hand. Apparently children these days are used to buying stuff (there's that "stuff" word again!) instead of discovering how items could be made at home.
Interesting... |

I saw that as well Bill - two parts. There was a section on the Norht Bennett St School as well. Violin making as well as 2 part/2 yr series on piano tech and rebuilding

It was quite interesting, not only for the item I mentioned. So much so that I recorded it on my recorder. It's so much better TV than "Judge Judy" is...
