One thing I really don't like at all -- that is, even when it is prepared and served as it is meant to be -- is blue cheese.

All the more left over for me. I won't touch a salad without it (and some good croutons). Smiler

OK... I know WHY you were there (which prototype did you train at) but inquiring minds want to know when and which boat(s) were you on? Hi

Oh, forgot to mention, in my case, MM2(SS) Nuc, MINSY 71-1, S1W, USS John Adams (SSBN 620), early 1970's...

In the canoe club from 80-89, S5G, USS Guardfish, (SSN-612) - lingered there for 5-1/2 years - I extended my command rotation so I could dodge qualifying all over again, and came to understand why they had that 3-year rule: By the time I left das Boot, I *knew* I was smarter than anyone I worked for. I'll wager you can empathize....

The mere fact *two* ex-M-div'ers hang out here speaks volumes to the quality of the membership here, and I'll refrain from further comment.

Ah Bill, the stories we can tell!

Wink
Of course I called it the "sunken canoe club"... fortunately we made an equal number of surfaces as dives... always a good thing for one's longevity.

We had a M-div officer by the name of "Lt. Wingnut" (not his given name, but one he was given... for obivious reasons.

I thought that USNPS MINSY was closed by the time you got there... I guess it must have shut down in the early to mid 80's (I remember being in the Bay Area around 1985 or so and finding out that it no longer there...

For the education of those of you who don't speak Navy jargon, here is an approximate translation... MINSY=Mare Island Naval Shipyard, located (until the early 90's) at Vallejo, California (spelled "Valley-Joe" but correctly pronounced va-YAY-ho) USNPS= U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School. S1W, S5G are designations for various nuclear power plants, S=Submarine, 1,5=model number, W=Westinghouse, G=General Electric (the contractor who built the reactor) zoomies=nuc talk for high energy ionizing particles/waves.

By the way, OT, I'm a (lower) tenor as well... must have been those zoomies!

We left MINSY in mid-'86. Thanks to the shipyard leaving one of our MSW end bell nuts lockwired less than finger-tight(and signed off as complete), we spent an extra six months in drydock being recertified SubSafe.

I think it's entirely possible we were the last sub overhauled at Mare Island.

Entirely possible... while I was there (years before) the Guitaro was still in drydock, after being accidentally sunk at the pier by the sandcrabs (sailor talk for civilian shipyard workers) As I heard it, it was a toss up for the Navy to either completely rebuild her or scrap the hull and start all over again... the damage was THAT extensive. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mare Island, I was young and single, no bills (until I bought a car...), 11-section duty and 30 miles from San Francisco. Those were the days...

Oh, yes, just thought I'd mention that Mare Island had a long and proud history as a submarine (and surface vessel) shipyard, including during World War II. It's a shame the Navy decided to pull out of San Francisco.

Cool photo

The joke that went around there in my time was MINSY had the most US Naval tonnage sunk of any US shipyard.

A friend in college was Costas Catacalos, who had family there. A group of us went in August, 1986?.. Yes, '86. We spent a week there.

We spent some time in Athens as well. This was the first time I saw textbook examples of "ugly American" tourists.

They made me excruciatingly embarrassed to be American. Mad

Doug, for all I know, we did stop by and say hi. Remember any brits driving a buick?

chocolate fig gelato? Hmmm, what kind of figs?
I stuff dried mission figs with darkdark chocolate. Its a nice snack.

Celery turns out to justify its existence when paired with buffalo wings and bluecheese dressing. Otherwise, I'm not sure why so much of it is sold.
