And, we're going to the Bahamas next month!. So, I'm frantically ripping through the year old or more piles of paperwork, sorting it all in the meantime as I should have done months ago. I still haven't found the passport, but have unearthed a vague memory of having taken it to the office to photocopy it. Help!! Well, at least my paperwork will finally be in order (what I can find of it that is) Bang Head

In the meantime, though, I found this old pic. This was shortly after I succumbed to JF's wiles - so sometime around 1988.

omg - you're so cute Kathy (those earring tho Blink)

Wow. This thread roared out of the starting gate and then vanished before I read it or thought about any questions. Maybe that's for the best, because it had a marvelous narrative quality to it, taken in one big bite as it reemerged here today. The line that kept running through my head was "What a long, strange trip it's been." I think a fiction author would have a real struggle to come up with a more interesting story line.

We missed all the mundane, trivial questions about favorite artists, composers, etc. and what your favorite foods are (besides lobster) and where you'd like to travel (but why, with that lake retreat), and what other hobbies or avocations you engage in (I'm not actually sure at this point if I have heard of any for JF besides maintaining the gardens).

I think the dialogue between spouses and the history you shared made this one of the most interesting "WTFer of the month" threads yet. The photos of both of you, your family, and some of the places and things you were talking about gave a life and immediacy to this thread that I found compelling.

I'll pose one specific question. If you had your druthers, what would it say on your tombstone.

I missed this one.

I am in email touch, but not close. When we first parted, it was mutual and amiciable. We had NOTHING to divide except some albums (she let me take what i wanted), a stereo (I kept and helped buy her a new one), bit of living room furniture (she took), a golden retriever (the only potential fight and I won because whe moved to a no dog condo), and two cats (we each got one). I think our savings totaled about $1,200.

She had an engagement right that was a family jewel from my side--from my grandmother. A few of my sisters wanted her to give it back, something I was not very keen about asking since ex DID have a close relationship with my granmother. One of my sisters DID ask and ex was bery offended and LET ME KNOW.

Many years later--had not talked to her in a decade or more and did not even know where she lived--I got a package and the ring was in it along with a short note about how she had to take it off for a few months due to problems with her finger and she figured it was time to pass it on for my daughter's eventual use.

I called her right up and we had a long talk and exchange emails from time to time. I also sent her a box of my grandmother's stuff as a thank you.

I Googled her recently and saw she was a contributor to Hillary's campaign.

We are both better off for having split up (I am sure she would agree). Fortunately there were no kids involved.

You hit that one pretty well!

In truth, I don't plan to have anything other than my name and the year I die. This will be carved into the side of a rough but round rock about the size of a watermelon. No polished granite for me. There is a little rocky grotto behind our camp on the lake where my mom's ashes ended up with a similar stone proped nearby on a rock. It seems as good a way to rest in peace as any.

I don't feel the need for an epitaph, nor do I feel unique or interesting enough to warrant one. My kids and their kids and maybe their kids will be using the camp (and amazing dock!) I helped build and maintain and pass on, and if that is the only thing anyone remembers about me as time goes on, that will be more than enough.

That is, of course, what they are called. "Jewels." One might intuitively think that it meant "stone," or "gem," but it means a piece of jewelry.

It's nice that she returned it, and that you reciprocated her kindness, and, finally, that you and she are on amicable terms.

I don't have any more questions. I've enjoyed this thread, and am looking forward to the next one. It was an inspired idea that you had to start this WTF tradition, Kathy. I confess that I have not read all of these threads, but I want to, and expect that I will soon. Thanks.

Wait, I do have a question. Please let me ask this one.

Do you, Kathy, and you, Jack, wear wedding rings, and Kathy, do you wear an engagement ring?

I like to hear stories about the decisions people make about engagement and wedding rings. Thanks.

James and Peter are both handsome!

Where's the 14 yr old beauty though?

Love the reflection pics. Legs in the window, tables benches and tables in and out.

This is my new favorite pic of you 2. A wonderful photo!!

I don't know who of you 2 likes this pic but we've got something in common: I stare at this same pic as a poster almost daily as I lift weights in the basement. It's so captivating!

Epitaphs, phew, haven't thought much about that. I think Frank over at the other place said he didn't really care much; that his ashes would just be scattered around. That's pretty much how I feel. I really can't imagine putting the burden on anyone of having to visit a grave to pay hommage. But, if I had to write one, off the top of my head, it would be something like: Jack of all trades, master of none, and hopefully she didn't do too much damage along the way.

Bee, I missed the question about seeing exes too. James's Dad is a pure wounded sole who still lives in his mother's house, and never makes contact, but I do keep contact with his mother (James's grandmother) and so occasionally talk to him when he picks up the phone. Peter's father is in cognito, by his own choice which has worked out ever so well for all of us. Every now and then someone in Boston will report to me that there's been a "Huntley siting" and then there was this little tidbit that James recently unearthed.

Blondie, that picture is JF's fave, but it was one of the first presents once we became a couple. In hung on the living room wall for a long time.
