Jack, you romantic dog. Smiler

Also, with your Yale (right?) MFA in photography you probably took some pics. Might we have a look?

And didn't you work for some famous B+W photographer?

I think we should adopt some kids to bring up. We are good at it.

I would need to scan some things, but that may be a fun project for the weekend. Would you prefer to see trees, people or cows?

I worked for two years for Walker Evans, except he was dead at the time. I made archive prints from all the negatives he left behind, as well as a lot of gallery prints as sales were made. It was really interesting to see how many many shots he would take to get that one great shot.

I didn't realize Evans was the guy whose archive you worked with, Jack. That's cool. His stuff is so iconic of an era.

Reading through this thread I just keep thinking, "Life is big." How much you have been through and what a nice place to end up.

So Jack, you really considered becoming a UU minister?

Do you participate in a congregation now?

Oh, please! I would prefer to see them all.

I have to say, though, people are always interesting, and I see cows everyday where I live now. They are actually fascinating, beautiful animals. In order of preference: people, cows, trees. Smiler

That was my friend from the divinity school who convinced me to go to law school.

When we first moved to Maine, kathy wanted to affiliate with a church and I had not been going for many years. We went to the UU church a half a dozen times to see if there was something we could both get into, but it was too secular humanist for kathy and I think she found the music a bit trite--new words to the old hymns. Anyway, she decided she wanted to go the the Lutheran church and when they found out she could play the organ, she was stuck....

I was raised UU myself. My sister and brother-in-law in Concord MA are fairly active in the UU church there (which borders on a mega-church!)

I know. You couldn't make that one up, could you? He became a legend in that court. Roll Eyes

Good for him! As I recall, you weren't too confident he would get in?? Of course, nobody should be confident of getting in there I guess.

Oldest lives in Brooklyn with his woman-friend of 3 or 4 years. (We LOVE her!) He is essentially freelancing--at times on a film, which is his preference, and at times with other things to pay the rent. He has had some great gigs working in or for art galleries building specialized crates to ship valuable artworks. He also recently got a $15k grant to support one of his own film projects. He became quire friendly with Chris Quinn, although I don't know if they have been in touch recently.

Middle graduated last June with a dual degree in Biology and Chemistry and was accepted to UCSF in a molecular biology program--Pharmacogenomics to be exact. Great deal, with full tuition and housing stipend paid. He convinced them to allow him to defer a year so he could travel to Taiwan to teach English, which he is now doing. He has a cute Taiwanese girlfriend--we know this from checking his MySpace page. We knew that his long distance relationship with someone back at Cornell would not last. He has now heard there may be some doubt about his place at UCSF with the Califinia economy in the tank, and he says he will hear one way or another next month. If he does not go to UCSF next year I would guess he would stay in Taiwan for another year rather than try to brave the job market here.

he did a post-grad year at choate (on a football scholarship) to give him a chance to improve his SAT scores and attract more attention for scholarships. the yale football coach had wanted him last year, but he shattered his arm playing the last game of the season, and took his final SATs while on heavy painkillers. the test results were not good enough for yale, and the naval academy, which had been his first choice (he got a commission and was on the short list), said they couldn't consider him any more because of the metal plate in his arm. he felt he deserved a re-do.

since he did get into some pretty fine schools (that we couldn't afford, and no scholarship money), we tried to convince him that getting into a prestigious ivy league college was not that important in the larger scheme of things. but he had his dream, and to his credit, he went after it.

we thought it was pretty strange to do a post grad year at a prep school, after you've already graduated from high school, and when you were already an honors student, but evidently it is not uncommon. and it worked! can't argue with success.

but enough about him. tell us what your two boys are up to.

edit: we cross posted. i'll now read above. Smiler

what impressive careers they both have and how very different from each other. one to cooper union and the other in molecular biology. can't get a whole lot more family diversity than that.

to grow into such achievements with the background you describe from their early years says volumes about both of your parenting. kudos to you both.
